Organic Cotton Diapers

Organic Cotton Diapers

Organic cotton

Organic cotton is not genetically modified, and organic cotton is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.

The Most Common Fiber

Cotton makes up 50% of the world's fiber usage. Cotton is still the most common fiber used for cloth diapers, other fibers, such as hemp, have potential but have not caught up yet.  In the past few years additional choices for cloth diapering materials have come to market like bamboo and microfiber (polyester).  Polyester is a man made fiber made from petroleum chemicals.

Yet most people still think of cloth diapers as cotton diapers.

The Problem with Cotton

Most of the impact of cotton happens in the field. The problem with cotton is the way most farmers grow it. The extreme use of pesticides, fungicides, fertilizers, and other chemical inputs make cotton a very high impact fiber to grow.

It takes about 1/3 pound of agricultural chemicals to grow the cotton for one conventional cotton T-shirt. Just 2.4% of the world's arable land is planted with cotton yet it accounts for 24% of the world's insecticide market and 11% of sale of global pesticides, making it the most pesticide-intensive crop grown on the planet.  But it doesn't have to be that way.

Clean Fields

Organic cotton and "cleaner cotton" go a long way toward reducing the impacts of cotton in the field. Reduction of agricultural chemicals results in:

  • protecting surface and groundwater
  • biodiversity
  • elimination of toxic materials on the farm and the factory.

Sustainable Cotton Diapers

By buying organic cotton cloth diapers, you are investing in a more sustainable future for your baby and planet by lowering the overall impact of your cloth diapering.

Organic is High Quality

Organic cotton cloth diapers are not a step backward nor are you sacrificing quality rather the natural cotton tends to be softer, more absorbent and longer lasting than the non-organic variety.  This added value at least partially offsets the higher cost for the organic products.
